Google has announced that Chrome version 138 will be the last version to support Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie), before support is completely discontinued in the next release, Chrome 139, scheduled for release on August 5, 2025.
From that date onwards, users will need Android 10 or newer to continue receiving browser updates.
This announcement was made officially through the Google Chrome support forum, where the support manager confirmed that older versions of the browser will continue to function but will not receive any security updates or new features, putting users of older phones in a difficult position in terms of security and performance.
This decision affects popular models such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, which were released with Android 7 and stopped receiving updates at Android 9.0, as well as the Galaxy Note 8, another popular phone that only received updates up to Android 9.0.
It also includes the impact on some mid-range Motorola and OnePlus phones, although the first generation of Google Pixel phones received Android 10.
For users still relying on these older devices, the end of Chrome support means an increased risk of security breaches, in addition to losing the ability to use many modern features that will gradually stop working.
