General Manager of the Public Establishment of Railways, Osama Haddad, discussed with the Turkish Consul in Aleppo, Hakan Cengiz, ways to enhance cooperation between Syria and Turkey in the field of transportation and railways. The meeting addressed mechanisms for exchanging expertise and modern technology in the railway sector, with expectations of signing cooperation agreements in the near future, including areas of technical training and support, through organizing field visits and training for Syrian personnel in Turkey. Haddad explained that this step comes within the context of mutual efforts to improve economic relations between Syria and Turkey, after years of decline in trade exchange and regional cooperation projects. He pointed out that the railway networks are one of the vital sectors affected by the war in Syria, where extensive infrastructure has been damaged or ceased operations. According to Haddad, the railway transport sector in Syria faces significant challenges such as funding shortages, the need for rehabilitating railway tracks and lines, securing modern trains and equipment, as well as the need to train personnel displaced by war conditions or experiencing a decline in expertise. The Turkish side expressed readiness to contribute to supporting Syria's efforts in rehabilitating and developing the railway transport network, to enhance transport efficiency and boost the national economy. It is worth mentioning that the concerned authorities in Syria currently rely on regional and international cooperation to reactivate this vital sector, as it is a fundamental pillar in the movement of goods and passengers, and a supportive element in facilitating trade and achieving sustainable development.
