Chichester City announced on Thursday evening the death of its young striker Billy Vigar, who also played for Arsenal, at the age of 21, due to a serious brain injury he sustained during an official match.
The tragic incident occurred last Saturday during the match between his team Chichester and Wingate & Finchley, where the player collided with a concrete wall according to the official website of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
In an official statement, the club detailed the short and tragic journey, stating: "Billy was placed in an induced coma after suffering a serious brain injury on Saturday, and underwent surgery on Tuesday to increase his chances of recovery, but he passed away on Thursday." The club added in its statement: "The reactions show the appreciation that the sports world has for the deceased."
For its part, the player's family expressed their deep sorrow, stating on Thursday that they are "devastated" following the incident during his beloved sport. The family explained: "The surgery helped him recover somewhat, but the injury was too severe and took his life."
The sports community was also affected by this tragedy, as the English Football Association expressed its condolences in a statement saying: "We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, loved ones, and all members of Chichester City Football Club during this difficult time."
As a mourning measure, Chichester Club confirmed on Thursday morning, before the official announcement of the death, the postponement of its match against Lewes scheduled for Saturday, with a new date to be determined later.
