Informed sources announced to Reuters today, Friday September 19, 2025, that the Taliban in Afghanistan released the British couple Peter and Barbie Reynolds, who had been held since February of last year, after Qatari mediation that airlifted them to the Qatari capital, Doha.
The sources clarified that Qatari authorities maintained continuous communication with the Taliban for several months, and their coordination was close with the British government and the couple's family to secure their safe release.
Diplomats stated that the couple was released under undisclosed charges.
It is worth mentioning that Peter and Barbie Reynolds, who are 80 and 75 years old respectively, have been living in Afghanistan for 18 years, managing an education and training organization in Bamyan province in central Afghanistan, where they decided to stay after the Taliban took power in 2021.
This move comes as part of the Taliban's efforts to gain international recognition for its government, amid Western concerns about the group's actions after regaining power.
This news highlights a humanitarian issue and a diplomatic achievement amid rising tensions in the region, as the political and security situation in Afghanistan continues to attract international attention.
