The Minister of Justice in the Syrian caretaker government, Dr. Mazhar al-Wais, discussed with the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross mission in Syria, Stefan Sakalian, ways to enhance cooperation in humanitarian and judicial fields during their meeting at the Ministry of Justice building.
The meeting focused on the current humanitarian situation in Syria, particularly the file of missing persons and prison conditions, as well as strengthening judicial capacities in applying international humanitarian law.
Dr. al-Wais emphasized "the importance of the role played by the International Committee of the Red Cross in promoting the principles of international humanitarian law," expressing his appreciation for its cooperation with Syrian judicial institutions on humanitarian issues.
He also stressed that "Syria respects the principles of humanitarian law, and all judicial bodies are committed to enforcing the law in overseeing detention centers and prisons."
The Minister stated that "the file of missing persons is a humanitarian and social priority in Syria," calling for "intensifying governmental, societal, and international efforts to address this issue, ensure knowing the fate of the missing persons, and provide necessary support to their families," while affirming the ministry's commitment to holding those involved accountable within legal frameworks.
On his part, Stefan Sakalian confirmed that "the International Committee of the Red Cross aims to support the Syrian government in implementing international humanitarian law and protecting human rights," noting that the committee's tasks focus on "protecting and assisting victims of armed conflicts and providing humanitarian aid to them."
Sakalian reviewed the committee's efforts in detention centers and Syrian prisons, explaining that "the presence of the committee in Syria dates back to 1976, based on Geneva Conventions," and that its work continues in coordination with official authorities to improve humanitarian conditions in various facilities.
