Chelsea player Mark Kokoria admitted that the moment of winning the 2025 Club World Cup witnessed a strange and confusing situation due to the presence of US President Donald Trump, who violated the usual protocols and refused to leave the podium.
Chelsea won the championship after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final match held at the 'MetLife' stadium in the United States.
During the celebrations, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stepped down from the platform immediately after handing the cup to team captain Reece James, while Trump remained standing among the players, clapping and smiling, refusing to leave.
Kokoria, who spoke to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, said that the players received clear instructions before the award ceremony that Trump would hand over the cup, and they could not lift it until he left the platform. He added: "We were all waiting for him to leave, but he didn't want to, instead he looked at us and said: 'I'll stay here'".
The Spanish player admitted that he felt afraid to make any comment to Trump or ask him to leave, and continued: "I wondered inside, who would dare to tell him? I was very scared".
Despite Infantino's attempt to urge Trump to leave, the latter remained standing in his place, causing clear confusion among the English team players, who were not used to breaking these protocols during moments of victory.
