OpenAI is preparing to launch its first consumer-oriented device in global markets during the second half of 2026, according to Axios news agency, in a move considered a significant shift for the company known for developing artificial intelligence technologies.

The Fruit of Collaboration with iPhone Designer

This mysterious device is the first practical outcome of OpenAI's acquisition of renowned designer Jony Ive, the former designer of iPhones, a deal made several years ago that sparked much speculation about the company's future directions.

Complete Mystery Surrounding the Nature of the Device

So far, OpenAI has not revealed the nature of the device or its core functions, as it has surrounded it from the beginning with a high degree of secrecy, opening the door to widespread rumors in tech circles.

Confirmation from a Senior Official

The official confirmation of the launch date came from Chris Lehan, Chief Global Affairs Officer at OpenAI, during his participation in the Axios House Davos events, marking the first clear statement from within the company regarding the device's timeline.

Timing Close to iPhone Launch

According to a report from Gizmodo, the device may be launched in September or close to it, a timing that usually coincides with Apple's announcement of its new generations of iPhones, adding a competitive dimension to the move.

A Small Device Without a Screen

The Axios report indicated that the new device will be small and will not have a screen, which aligns with a previous description by CEO Sam Altman, who stated that the device would be "more peaceful" compared to traditional smartphones.

Plans to Launch Multiple Devices

For his part, Lehan clarified that OpenAI is looking to launch more than one device this year, noting that the announced timeline is the closest to execution, while leaving the door open for potential changes.

Smart Speaker or Audio Device?

In the absence of official information, speculation about the nature of the device is increasing. A report from TechCrunch indicated that the company has moved engineering teams to work on an advanced audio model, reinforcing the hypothesis that the device could be a smart speaker relying on artificial intelligence.

An Integrated Device Ecosystem

On another note, 9to5Mac reported that OpenAI may be planning to launch a complete family of devices that work together, rather than just a single device.

Smart Pen or Competitor to 'AirPods'?

Previous reports had suggested that the device might be a smart pen equipped with a speaker and microphone, or smart wireless earbuds capable of competing with AirPods, with deep integration of artificial intelligence technologies in daily use.
