In an important diplomatic move, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet tomorrow Tuesday with a group of Arab leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, just days before his anticipated meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House scheduled for September 29.
These meetings come amid escalating Israeli-Palestinian tensions, with a growing wave of recognition of the Palestinian state and Israeli threats to annex parts of the West Bank.
According to informed U.S. sources, the meeting will focus on discussing ways to end the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, as well as developing a comprehensive vision for the plan that follows the cessation of hostilities, in an attempt to contain the worsening crisis.
Sources confirmed that the White House has officially invited the Arab leaders to participate in this crucial meeting, according to what was reported by the site “Axios”.
* Trump Seeks Arab Support for the “Next Day” Plan
The Trump administration aims through this meeting to urge Arab countries to support U.S. efforts to end the war in Gaza and to actively participate in implementing the “Next Day” plan, which may involve sending Arab forces to replace the Israeli army in maintaining stability within the sector.
In return, sources expect that the Arab leaders will demand Trump to pressure Netanyahu to stop the war in Gaza and refrain from any unilateral actions such as annexing land in the West Bank.
* Israeli Military Escalation with Threats to Destroy Gaza
In this context, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu renewed yesterday, Sunday, his promise to continue military operations aimed at protecting Israel's borders, reaffirming his rejection of the establishment of a Palestinian state.
This coincided with Israel intensifying its ground attack to expand its control over the city of Gaza, which Israel now controls about 70% of, amid widespread destruction.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also vowed to completely destroy the Gaza Strip, describing it as “it will become a graveyard for Hamas,” despite widespread international condemnation and warnings of the humanitarian catastrophe facing the densely populated city.
* Gaza Under Siege and Famine
Since the beginning of October 2023, Gaza has been experiencing a continuous war under a suffocating siege, with a severe shortage of food and medical aid.
In August, the United Nations announced for the first time that the sector is suffering from a real famine, which increases the fragility of the humanitarian situation.
This anticipated meeting in New York carries great hopes for finding a way out of the crisis, amid international and regional pressure to stop the bloodshed and agree on a plan that restores stability to the region.
