President Donald Trump said today, Friday, that China has violated an agreement with the United States regarding tariffs. Trump wrote on his platform "Truth Social" that "China has completely violated its agreement with the United States, which may not be surprising to some." U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Piesent told Fox News on Thursday that trade talks with China are "somewhat stalled," and reaching a final agreement will likely require direct involvement from President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Two weeks after negotiations that represented a breakthrough and resulted in a temporary truce in the trade war between the world's two largest economies, Piesent said progress has been slow since then but he expects more talks in the coming weeks. It is worth noting that the U.S.-China agreement to reduce three-digit tariffs for 90 days led to a significant increase in global stock markets. However, it did not address the underlying reasons behind Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods, which mainly revolve around long-standing U.S. complaints about China's state-dominated export-dependent economic model, leaving these issues for future discussions.
