The Israeli army confirmed on Saturday evening that it had killed Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, on May 13, confirming what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said days earlier. Deif was the target of an Israeli airstrike on a hospital in southern Gaza earlier this month. Netanyahu announced on Wednesday the killing of Mohammed Deif, the younger brother of Yahya Deif, the deceased leader of the movement and mastermind of the October 2023 attack. Hamas has not confirmed or denied his death. In response to the announcement, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said on his "X" platform account: "It is now official: the master of killers, Mohammed Deif, has been eliminated along with the Rafah Brigade commander Mohammed Shabana and the gang of criminals who were with him under the European Hospital in Gaza." He added: "Israel's long arm will pursue all those responsible for the crimes and atrocities of October 7, wherever they may be, until they are completely eliminated." He concluded by saying: "Az al-Din al-Haddad in Gaza and Khalil al-Hayya abroad - and all their partners in crime - you are next on the list." According to Channel 14, estimates suggest that Az al-Din al-Haddad, considered one of Hamas's top leaders, is expected to be appointed as the head of Hamas's military wing in the Gaza Strip.
