In an unconventional move, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that the Republican Party plans to hold a national conference specifically for the 2026 midterm congressional elections, in an effort to boost his party's chances and maintain the limited control it currently has in both chambers.
Typically, national party conferences in the United States are held only during presidential election years, making this announcement exceptional and controversial.
This was stated in a tweet via the "Truth Social" platform where Trump said:
"The Republican Party is very eager to hold a conference for the 2026 midterm elections. We will hold it at the highest level. It will be very fun and productive."
According to a previous report from "Axios", some Democrats are also considering holding a similar conference before the midterm elections, reflecting the rising competition between the two parties in the upcoming battle.
A fierce battle is underway between Republicans and Democrats over redistricting congressional districts, a step that could significantly determine which party will succeed in controlling the House of Representatives in the upcoming elections.
Currently, Republicans hold a narrow majority in Congress, with 53 seats in the Senate compared to 47 for Democrats, and a majority of 219 seats compared to 213 in the House of Representatives, making every vote and electoral move crucial.
Loss of the majority in Congress would be a severe blow to Trump, as it would greatly restrict his ability to implement his legislative agenda if he returns to power.
