President Donald Trump said he will not attend the Friday talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey, choosing instead to return to Washington to see his new grandchild. Speaking at an event in the UAE, Trump mentioned that his daughter Tiffany has just given birth and he wants to see his grandchild as soon as possible. Trump had previously left the door open for a last-minute visit to Turkey to attend the talks focused on ending the Russian war against Ukraine. He stated that there will be no real progress in peace efforts until he personally meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation, with an average of 5,000 people being killed weekly in the war in Ukraine. A trilateral meeting between Turkey, Russia, and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on Friday. These are the first direct talks between Ukraine and Russia since the spring of 2022, shortly after the start of the Russian war. Turkey had hosted talks between the two countries following the beginning of the war in February 2022, but they were not successful.
