The Syrian President, Ahmed Al-Shar'a, issued Presidential Decree No. 66 yesterday, Friday, June 13, forming the High Committee for the People's Council elections, in a new step towards organizing the upcoming legislative elections in the country. The new committee is chaired by Mohammed Taha Al-Ahmad, and its members include: Hassan Ibrahim Al-Daghim, Imad Yakoub Barq, Lara Shaher Aizouqi, Nawar Elias Najmeh, Mohammed Ali Mohammed Yassin, Mohammed Khedr Wali, Mohammed Yasser Kahala, Hanan Ibrahim Al-Balkhi, Badr Al-Jamous, and Anas Al-Abdah. The decree grants the High Committee full authority to oversee the formation of sub-electoral bodies, tasked with electing two-thirds of the People's Council members, while the remaining third is appointed by the President. The decree also stipulates that the People's Council will consist of 150 members, distributed among the provinces according to population size, with two main categories for representation: dignitaries and intellectuals, in accordance with conditions set by the High Electoral Committee. In detail, the distribution of electoral seats by province is as follows: Aleppo: 20 seats Damascus: 11 seats Rural Damascus: 10 seats Homs: 9 seats Hama: 8 seats Latakia: 6 seats Tartous: 5 seats Idlib: 7 seats Deir ez-Zor: 6 seats Al-Hasakah: 6 seats Raqqa: 3 seats Daraa: 4 seats As-Suwayda: 3 seats Quneitra: 2 seats This formation is a crucial step in preparing for vital elections for the future of the political life in Syria, as the authorities aim to restructure constitutional institutions and ensure parliamentary representation according to new legal and organizational mechanisms.
