"Reuters" has seen an internal email indicating that the Trump administration has directed immigration officials to suspend most raids on farms, hotels, restaurants, and meatpacking plants.
A knowledgeable source stated that the order to reduce raids came directly from Trump himself, seemingly aimed at minimizing the impact of a demand made by White House senior adviser Stephen Miller in late May to conduct stricter enforcement operations.
The source added that Trump was not aware of the extent of that enforcement campaign and that "once he learned of it, he backed off."
The new directive issued on Thursday still allows for investigations into serious crimes such as human trafficking. The New York Times was the first to report on this directive.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the validity of these directives, stating, "We will follow the President's directives and continue to work on removing the toughest foreign criminals illegally from America's streets."
