The United Nations Security Council adopted a formal statement today, Friday, emphasizing support for the Lebanese government's commitments to exercise its sovereignty over its entire territory, in a move that reflects an international consensus on the need to enhance Lebanon's stability amid escalating regional tensions.
The statement called on the international community to provide the necessary support to the Lebanese army to ensure its ability to deploy south of the Litani River, in accordance with Resolution 1701 issued following the July 2006 war.
It also reiterated support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and urged all parties to respect the safety and security of its personnel working in the south.
The Security Council emphasized the importance of the full implementation of its Resolutions 1701 and 1559, which call for a cessation of hostilities, the restriction of arms to the Lebanese state, and the prevention of any armed presence outside the framework of legitimacy.
It stressed the necessity for all parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and not to take any steps that could undermine stability.
The statement also welcomed Lebanon's readiness to begin demarcating its borders with Syria and the efforts made to prevent smuggling operations across the borders, considering these steps a positive indication of Beirut's commitment to enhancing its sovereignty and securing its borders.
This international stance comes at a time when southern Lebanon is witnessing repeated tensions, amid increasing calls to strengthen the role of the Lebanese army and ensure continued cooperation with UNIFIL forces, in order to maintain stability and prevent a slide into a wider confrontation.
