In a step aimed at enhancing the organization of the imported pharmaceutical market in the country, the Syrian Ministry of Health announced the formation of a special committee for imported medicines, including representatives from relevant authorities, to provide advice and support in making decisions that ensure the continuity of pharmaceutical supply and serve the public interest.
The announcement came during a meeting held by the ministry under the chairmanship of the Assistant Minister for Pharmaceutical Affairs, Dr. Abdo Mahalli, in the presence of representatives from imported drug warehouses, as well as heads of departments from the Directorate of Pharmaceutical Affairs.
The discussion focused on the main challenges facing the pharmaceutical import sector, including smuggling and counterfeiting.
It was also agreed to establish a Syrian Pharmaceutical Importers Association, where a general body and a secretary-general will be elected, as a prelude to starting official licensing procedures in accordance with legal principles.
The participants emphasized the necessity of establishing strict mechanisms and controls for import operations, ensuring the availability of medicines from reliable and approved sources that adhere to global quality standards, while also emphasizing the importance of providing administrative facilitations by the ministry to meet the needs of both the public and private sectors.
These steps are part of a broader strategy aimed at improving the pharmaceutical sector in Syria and ensuring its safe and effective delivery to patients, amidst the challenges facing the healthcare sector in general.
