The Lebanese army announced yesterday, Tuesday, the arrest of the leader of ISIS in Lebanon, following a series of security monitoring and surveillance operations carried out by its intelligence directorate.
The Lebanese army statement said:
"After a series of security monitoring and surveillance operations, the Intelligence Directorate arrested the citizen (R.F.), known as (Qasura), who is one of the prominent leaders of the terrorist ISIS organization."
The statement explained that the detainee was involved in planning security operations inside Lebanese territories and was arrested as part of efforts to combat terrorism and prevent the execution of plans that threaten national security.
The statement added that a large quantity of weapons and ammunition, as well as electronic devices and equipment used in manufacturing drones, were found in the detainee's possession, reflecting the level of danger associated with his activities inside Lebanon.
The army pointed out that "Qasura" had assumed the leadership of ISIS in Lebanon after the previous leader (M.K.), known as "Abu Saeed al-Shami," was arrested. The organization had appointed him as the "governor of Lebanon" in December of last year, along with several other leaders.
Qasura's arrest came just two days after a suicide bombing targeted a church in Syria, killing 25 people. The attack was attributed to ISIS, despite a claim of responsibility by an unknown group called "Saraya Ansar al-Sunna," which Syrian authorities described as a fictitious group used by ISIS for camouflage.
It is worth mentioning that ISIS had engaged in fierce battles with the Lebanese army during the second decade of the third millennium and carried out several bombings targeting areas of Hezbollah influence.
However, the Lebanese army, in cooperation with security forces, managed to militarily defeat the organization in 2017, while dormant cells continued attempts to reactivate themselves within Lebanese territories.
