The Supreme Electoral Committee in Syria condemns the assassination of a People's Council candidate in Tartus

The Supreme Electoral Committee for the People's Council in Syria issued a statement strongly condemning the assassination of the council candidate, Dr. "Haider Younis Shaheen", in Tartus Governorate. The committee described the incident as a "heinous crime aimed at undermining security and sowing discord", affirming in its official statement its "full support for the Ministry of Interior in pursuing the killers and bringing them to justice".
The statement issued by the committee said: "The hand of treachery struck him at the hands of criminals from the remnants of the fallen regime, while he was on the path of political struggle in building a new Syria, leaving this trust in the hands of the Syrian people". The statement also emphasized that "the electoral process will continue and will not be affected by attempts at intimidation and extortion".
According to local sources, Dr. Shaheen, who belonged to the Alawite sect and was known for his supportive stance on participating in the elections, was killed on Tuesday evening inside his home in the village of Mi'ar Shakir in the countryside of Tartus. The sources clarified that a masked gunman fired four bullets at the candidate, resulting in his immediate death at the scene of the incident.
Reports revealed that the victim had previously received direct threats from groups known as "Assad's remnants", which are accused of deliberate attempts to sabotage the electoral process in the Syrian coast through intimidation tactics and obstructing citizen participation.
In response to the incident, the security agencies tasked the Criminal Security Branch with conducting a comprehensive investigation to identify the perpetrators and apprehend them. They also warned that any attempt to destabilize political and social security in the region "will not go unpunished". For his part, Major General Abdul Aziz Al-Ahmad, head of the Internal Security Forces in Latakia, urged the residents to "cooperate directly with the relevant authorities by reporting any suspicious movements".
