Kirkuk International Airport in northern Iraq was attacked yesterday evening with three unidentified projectiles, according to the airport administration and Iraqi security authorities.
The Iraqi News Agency confirmed that the attack occurred at exactly 11:30 pm, where two Katyusha rockets fell on the military side of the airport, while the third projectile fell in the civilian section, causing a limited fire in the grass near the gate separating the two areas.
Despite the strength of the explosions, the airport administration confirmed that the losses were limited, with only one person sustaining minor injuries, and no damage was recorded on the airport's runway or vital facilities.
The fire was quickly extinguished by the firefighting teams.
On the other hand, the Kirkuk Operations Command confirmed that security and military forces immediately moved to the scene of the incident, taking strict security measures to ensure the airport's safety and prevent any potential threats.
The attack did not affect the flight schedule, as airport operations continued normally, according to an official statement.
SIMultaneously, local sources reported that another mortar shell fell on a house near the airport, without revealing further details about injuries or damages.
So far, no party has claimed responsibility for the attack, while authorities have launched an extensive investigation to determine the source of the projectiles and the party behind this security escalation in an area considered one of the most sensitive in northern Iraq.
