"The Black Moon".. Between Myth and Astronomical Truth

British media reports, led by the Daily Mail, have sparked widespread concern after discussing the appearance of what is called the "Black Moon" on August 22, linking it to prophecies about the "end of the world".
However, experts from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences quickly refuted these claims, confirming that there is no astronomical phenomenon called the "Black Moon" this year, neither in scientific terms nor in astronomical calculations.
The scientists explained that the lunar cycle takes about 29.5 days, making the occurrence of two new moons in one month a rare event, which only happens if the first falls at the beginning of the month and the second at the end. According to calculations, the last new moon occurred on July 24, while the next one will occur on August 23, which means it is impossible for two new moons to appear in the same month this year.
The specialists pointed out that the next true "Black Moon" (two new moons in one month) will be in August 2027, not in 2025.
Apart from the "end of the world" scenarios, the scientists confirmed that the upcoming new moon will provide astronomy enthusiasts with an ideal opportunity to see the sky with exceptional clarity, as the moonlight disappears and prominent constellations such as Orion, Taurus, and Leo, along with Venus and Mars, appear in a unique cosmic scene.
