Several areas in Britain have recently witnessed a widespread invasion of swarms of beetles that have invaded homes and residential areas, causing astonishment and concern among residents, in a seasonal phenomenon that recurs as winter approaches.
Videos posted on social media showed scenes of beetles covering the walls of homes and windows, while many residents expressed their annoyance and fear of this "sudden invasion." One user wrote: "The beetles completely covered the living room, I was terrified!"
In a scientific comment on the phenomenon, Professor Tim Coulson, a biologist at the University of Oxford, explained in an interview with the Daily Mail that these insects are looking for warm places to hide in preparation for winter, adding that they tend to shelter inside homes, under trees, or among piles of leaves as temperatures drop.
For his part, Max Barclay, the beetle curator at the Natural History Museum in London, stated that these insects “may carry some types of fungi, but they do not infect humans,” emphasizing that they do not pose a direct health risk.
Experts have urged residents not to kill these insects, pointing out that beetles play an important ecological role in maintaining natural balance, as they help decompose organic matter within local ecosystems.
