In a surprising move, a Pentagon official revealed that the United States has withdrawn 500 American soldiers from northeastern Syria in recent weeks as part of a plan to safely and carefully reposition forces based on "specific battlefield conditions." The official also mentioned that two American bases have been completely closed, while a third military base has been handed over to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Washington's main local ally in the fight against ISIS. US Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barak, stated in an interview with Turkish channel "NTV" that the country is moving towards reducing its military bases in Syria from eight to just one. Barak commented, "Our current policies towards Syria will not be an extension of past century policies, as they simply did not succeed." Barak also emphasized that US support for the SDF will continue, explaining that they are "an important ally" in the region, especially within the framework of the international coalition's efforts to eliminate ISIS. For years, Washington has maintained a military presence in Syria, currently estimated at over 900 soldiers, as part of the international coalition's operations against ISIS, which previously controlled vast areas in Syria and Iraq before suffering consecutive defeats. These movements come at a time when the Syrian file is witnessing rapid changes, both regionally and internationally, raising questions about the future of American influence in the region, especially with increasing discussions about reshaping alliances within and outside Syria.
