The United Nations announced today, Tuesday, that its teams are participating in humanitarian response efforts, in collaboration with Syrian authorities, to assess the effects of the fires raging in the countryside of Latakia.

The UN News Center quoted UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric as saying in a press conference in New York: "UN teams are on the ground to conduct urgent assessments to determine the scale of the disaster and identify immediate humanitarian needs."

UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Syria, Adam Abdel-Moula, had earlier praised the exceptional courage and dedication of firefighters and first responders, reaffirming the UN's commitment to supporting authorities in providing timely assistance, mobilizing rapid support for the Syrian government and communities affected by the fires in the countryside of Latakia.

It is worth noting that the fires raging in northern Latakia countryside have damaged more than 10,000 hectares so far in the worst wave of fires the region has witnessed, amidst significant challenges facing firefighting teams, including harsh weather conditions, strong winds, rugged terrains, presence of mines and war remnants, neglect of the former regime of forests, and lack of fire lines, all of which have posed obstacles to completing the firefighting operation as intended.
