The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, said today, Sunday, that his country will obstruct any European Union sanctions against Russia that harm its national interests, after parliament approved a resolution calling on the government not to support any new measures.
Fico added that Slovakia wants to remain constructive within the bloc, but described the resolution as a political tool with a strong message.
Speaking at a press conference posted on his party's YouTube page, he said, "If there is a penalty that would harm us, I will never vote in favor of it."
Slovakia, a member of NATO and the European Union, has differed from Western allies in its stance on Ukraine under Fico's left-wing nationalist coalition government, halting official military aid to Kyiv as Ukraine faces the Russian invasion.
