Cardiologist at "New York Langone" center, "Steven Williams," made a heavy statement by saying that "inactivity is as harmful to health as smoking."
In detail, "Williams" explained, according to the "New York Post," that "when people come to the office and say they lead an active life because they stand on their feet all day, I am not impressed by that. You may not be moving at a pace that fits the definition of physical activity."
He emphasized that movement is key. Physical activity provides a range of benefits, including weight control, blood pressure reduction, cholesterol improvement, bone and muscle strengthening, inflammation reduction. It also enhances brain function, and can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression.
For a long time, sitting has been linked to heart diseases, diabetes, weight gain, depression, and even some types of cancer. In fact, a study conducted on 8,000 adults found a direct link between prolonged sitting and increased risk of premature death.
Williams further stated: "A sedentary lifestyle is now viewed as akin to smoking, it is extremely detrimental."
However, "experts say that standing instead of sitting behind a desk, marketed as a solution to a sedentary lifestyle, is not a magical solution, even if it helps burn more calories."
On the other hand, "Ben Greenfield," a fitness expert, reported that "the negative health consequences of sitting without movement for more than 60-90 minutes apply to any position, including standing."
Therefore, instead of focusing solely on standing, Williams stressed the importance of moving the body.
