In a horrific crime that shook the Turkish city of Izmir, a young man shot his ex-fiancée and her mother in the middle of a main street, resulting in the immediate death of his fiancée while her mother was left in critical condition. The incident occurred at half past five yesterday afternoon, when Najat Yorgun, 40 years old, shot Celine Sakin (39 years old) and her mother, Serbil Kaynak, before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide at the scene. Despite medical efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. Turkish police have initiated investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident, whose motives are still unknown, while two cars parked at the crime scene were also reportedly shot at. The incident has sparked widespread anger in Turkish society and shed light once again on the issue of femicide in the country. As authorities continue their investigations, prominent women's associations, such as the "Stop Femicide Platform," have urged the Turkish government to take swift action to end violence against women. These associations have reiterated their call to reinstate the "Istanbul Convention," aimed at protecting women from domestic violence in Turkey.
