The Directorate of Antiquities and Museums in Aleppo, in cooperation with the Aleppo Governorate and the Internal Security Forces, succeeded in carrying out a qualitative operation that resulted in the recovery of a rare collection of archaeological artifacts that were on the verge of being smuggled out of the country in an attempt to loot Syrian cultural heritage.
The recovered pieces were delivered to the Aleppo National Museum, where a specialized committee of archaeology experts was formed to examine the contents of the collection, identify the original pieces from the counterfeits, within a precise mechanism for documenting and digitally archiving each recovered piece.
The rescued pieces include a collection of metal coins and archaeological pottery dating back to the Greek, Byzantine, and Islamic eras, reflecting the great historical value of this collection.
These archaeological pieces are scheduled to undergo thorough cleaning processes by specialists before being sent to the specialized scientific departments in the Directorate for detailed archaeological assessments and classifications to preserve these treasures within the national antiquities registry.
This operation is part of the ongoing efforts of the Syrian state to protect national heritage and combat artifact smuggling, which has significantly increased during the years of war, making the recovery of these pieces a new victory in the battle to preserve the Syrian cultural identity.
