Eid cookies are considered a beloved tradition during the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, but excessive consumption can lead to various health risks due to their high sugar, fat, and calorie content. There are 6 important reasons to avoid overindulging in Eid cookies, as highlighted by Dr. Yasmin Nouraldin, a specialist in therapeutic nutrition, obesity treatment, and sports nutrition. According to Nouraldin, overeating cookies can cause weight gain due to their high calorie content, leading to fat accumulation in the body when consumed in large quantities. Excessive consumption of Eid cookies can also cause digestive disorders, indigestion, bloating, gas, and diarrhea, especially for individuals sensitive to ingredients like dairy products or gluten. Moreover, overindulging in cookies can raise blood sugar levels, posing a risk to diabetic patients, and contain saturated fats that increase harmful cholesterol levels, raising the risk of heart and vascular diseases. Additionally, it can lead to dental problems, increase the risk of cavities and plaque formation, as well as feelings of fatigue and lethargy due to sugar intake causing energy fluctuations. To enjoy Eid cookies healthily, the nutrition specialist advised planning ahead and determining a daily cookie intake amount to adhere to moderation, such as consuming one or two pieces at a time. Choosing healthier alternatives like cookies made from whole wheat flour with reduced sugar and added nuts was recommended. The nutrition expert also emphasized the importance of physical activity, walking, or light exercises to burn excess calories from cookie consumption, along with consuming digestion-supporting beverages like mint or green tea after eating cookies to improve digestion and reduce bloating. The Egyptian expert concluded by stating that moderation is key to enjoying Eid cookies without facing health issues.
