North Korea has condemned the U.S. President Donald Trump's project to build a new missile defense system called the "Golden Dome," considering it an "extremely serious" threat aimed at arming space and turning it into a potential nuclear battlefield. The North Korean Foreign Ministry stated in an official memorandum released and published by the North Korean Central News Agency that the establishment of a new missile defense system by the United States represents a "highly threatening initiative targeting the strategic security of nuclear-armed countries." The memorandum warned the international community that this American move is "the root cause of igniting a global nuclear and space arms race," explaining that the United States is "determined to militarize outer space," raising concerns for nuclear-armed countries and potentially turning space into a battlefield. The Korean Foreign Ministry added that the "Golden Dome" project will increase the likelihood of a nuclear war in outer space, posing a serious threat to global stability. President Donald Trump announced details and initial funding for this new missile system last week, emphasizing that it is "extremely important for the success and even survival of our country," planning to spend $175 billion on the system to be ready by the end of his presidency in 2029. The "Golden Dome" system includes advanced defensive capabilities, including ground and space capabilities to detect and intercept missiles in four main stages: starting from missile discovery and destruction before launch, then intercepting it in its early post-launch stages, passing through the mid-flight stage, and ending with the final stage as it approaches the target. The project faces significant technological and political challenges, and its cost may be high, according to analysts. In turn, China has expressed strong opposition to the project, accusing the United States of threatening global stability.
