The name of Waupun prison in Wisconsin, USA, has come to the forefront again after the death of a sixth prisoner in less than a year, amid accusations of mistreatment by its former administration.
The state prison administration announced through its website the death of Damian Evans (23 years old) on Tuesday inside the prison, without disclosing any additional details.
Meanwhile, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt confirmed in a message to the Associated Press that the police are investigating the incident but refrained from providing any additional information at the moment.
Evans, who was serving a 7-year prison sentence for armed robbery, in addition to two more years for violating parole conditions, became the sixth prisoner to die inside this prison since June 2023.
Previous deaths included suicides in cells, a death from a fentanyl overdose, a prisoner who died from a stroke, and another due to dehydration and malnutrition.
These deaths are not isolated from a scandal that rocked the prison last year, where prosecutors charged the then-prison warden, Randall Hepp, and 8 of his staff with mistreating prisoners after the deaths of inmates Cameron Williams and Donald Mayer.
Three of the eight staff members faced charges of misconduct, while Hepp later retired amid mounting pressure.
With the increase in mysterious deaths and authorities failing to provide convincing explanations, questions are escalating about what is happening inside the prison walls, whether negligence is the cause, or if there is something more sinister behind bars!
