The official account of the Ballon d'Or on the "X" platform sparked controversy after posting a video that followers considered a sarcastic response to the statements of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of the Saudi club Al-Nassr, who described the award as "fake and lacking integrity".
The video, featuring French player Ousmane Dembélé of Paris Saint-Germain and one of the nominees for this year's award, included a series of elimination choices among the legends of the game.
Dembélé started by choosing between Luka Modrić and Ricardo Kaká, selecting the latter, then preferred Kaká over Ronaldinho, before giving the edge to Karim Benzema over the Brazilian magician.
Later, Dembélé chose the "phenomenon" Ronaldo over Benzema, leading to a final showdown between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, where he made his decision in favor of the Argentine star, who has won the Ballon d'Or 8 times.
Messi is the most awarded player in history with 8 Ballon d'Ors, compared to 5 for Ronaldo.
