A young Egyptian man appeared in a live broadcast on Facebook, speaking with a desperate voice and words filled with bitterness and injustice, before announcing that he had taken a poisonous "pesticide" pill.
No one knew these would be his last moments, as he said with a trembling voice:
"I took the pesticide... and my guilt is on the conscience of all who wronged me."
Another person tried to dissuade him from his decision, but he replied with a more shocking sentence:
"Do you think I'm joking?... I took two pesticide pills."
It didn't take long before social media platforms turned into a state of shock. Upon reaching the hospital, the poison had done its job, ending his life amidst the shock of his family and friends.
Mustafa, the young man who was only 22 years old, was facing psychological pressures and heavy debts.
What exacerbated the situation was a harsh comment on one of his posts, sarcastically urging him to take the "pesticide" to end his suffering, as if it was the final spark that led him to carry out his fatal decision.
This deadly pill, originally intended to protect crops from pests, has turned into a silent means of death spreading among Egyptian rural youth. It is sold at a cheap price but destroys the lives of those who ingest it within hours, with no antidote or chance of survival.
His friend, devastated by his departure, could only find moving words to pray for mercy and urge everyone to stop harming others with words, saying:
"May God have mercy on you by the thoughts of people... Mustafa committed suicide because of a comment whose author did not realize it could kill."
In recent years, "pesticide pills" have dominated the headlines in Egypt due to the increasing cases of suicide using them, as they silently kill those who take them over hours, without their families being able to save them.
These pills are also known as "pesticide tablets" and contain the toxic substance aluminum phosphide, which has no antidote worldwide, leaving those who ingest it facing certain death.
Originally used as an effective insecticide and rodenticide, aluminum phosphide quickly spread in agriculture due to its ability to release lethal phosphine gas. However, it has transformed from a tool to protect crops into a means to end lives, in a tragic phenomenon that is increasing day by day.
