Iraq to Prosecute 47 French Nationals Linked to 'ISIS' Transferred from Syria

The Iraqi National Intelligence Service announced today, Friday, the receipt of 47 French citizens from northeastern Syria to be tried on charges related to membership in 'ISIS'.
The agency stated in a statement that the transfer operation was based on judicial arrest warrants and the results of investigations conducted under the supervision of the Iraqi judiciary, clarifying that some of the detainees directly participated in terrorist attacks inside Iraq between 2014 and 2017, while others were linked to activities threatening Iraqi national security from outside the country.
The statement confirmed that the transfer of the accused was carried out within clear legal frameworks, and that they will be subjected to trial under Iraqi laws pertaining to terrorism crimes, emphasizing the continued efforts to pursue all those involved in crimes against the Iraqi people 'regardless of their nationalities or locations'.
It is worth noting that France is one of the European countries that contributed the most fighters to 'ISIS' during its peak activity in Syria and Iraq, where the issue of foreign fighters remains a contentious topic within European circles between those advocating for their return and local prosecution, and those preferring to let them face justice in conflict countries.
