In a sudden and unprecedented military development, senior Iranian officials confirmed that US forces carried out an aerial attack early Sunday on sensitive nuclear facilities inside Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
The attack took place around 2:30 am Iran time, according to three Iranian officials quoted by The New York Times who refused to disclose their names due to the sensitivity of the situation.
Following the strikes, the Iranian Fars news agency reported that residents of Qom, near the Fordow facility, heard loud explosions, while local media announced that Iran had evacuated three nuclear sites some time ago, indicating anticipation of this escalation.
The Qom governorate announced that part of the Fordow site was attacked, stating that the situation is currently stable, with a promise to provide further details later.
One Iranian official told Fars agency that he witnessed aerial attacks targeting areas near the Isfahan and Natanz facilities.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social platform that US warplanes carried out an extremely successful attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, and they left Iranian airspace after dropping a "large payload of bombs" on the Fordow site.
Trump stated that the Fordow site was completely destroyed, urging Iran to agree to end the war, saying: "There is no military force on earth that can do what we did today... It's time for peace".
He added that what happened is a historic moment for the United States, Israel, and the world.
On the other hand, a US official revealed that B_2 stealth bombers were used in the strikes, advanced aircraft capable of carrying large bombs designed to penetrate deep fortifications, ideal for attacking facilities like Natanz and Fordow.
Reuters agency mentioned that these bombers took off from US bases and successfully carried out their mission.
Israeli media also aired videos showing the aftermath of previous Israeli strikes on the targeted facilities, confirming a phone call between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before the strike, indicating close coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv in this attack.
The direct US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities opens a new chapter of tension in the region, putting the world on the brink of a major explosion, with potential significant regional and international repercussions, while Tehran remains silent so far about the possible response.
