Talking during sleep is a common phenomenon that affects both adults and children alike, and often carries negative phrases or foul language, which has prompted sleep researchers to study this intriguing phenomenon.
Luigi De Gennaro, a professor of psychology at the "Sapienza" University in Rome, states that talking during sleep is one of the most common sleep disorders, ranging from unintelligible murmurs to clear insults, noting that most people are unaware of it unless told by others.
Researcher Deirdre Barrett from Harvard University analyzed recordings of thousands of people talking in their sleep and compared them to what they report about their dreams or conversations while awake. She concluded that nighttime speech is characterized by more negative emotions, predominantly anger and references to food and sex, in addition to a significant increase in the use of foul language, at a rate six times higher compared to wakefulness.
A study published in the journal Sleep in 2017 confirmed that about 10% of the phrases spoken by sleepers fall under the category of curses or insults, which may explain why some cases are described as "nighttime cursing episodes".
Sleep researchers indicate that talking can occur in all stages of sleep, but it is most evident during the "rapid eye movement" phase, where some individuals may be able to respond to questions or even engage in short conversations while asleep.
Jing Chang, a neurologist at Harvard Medical School, believes that the phenomenon is more prevalent among those suffering from sleep disorders or experiencing psychological stress, and that lack of sleep and alcohol consumption increase the likelihood of its occurrence.
