This morning, Saturday, May 3rd, the body of former captain in the Assad regime's army, Khalid Anad Al-Talb Al-Ghazali, was found near the Najih junction in the northern countryside of Daraa, showing signs of gunshot wounds, in an incident adding to the series of assassinations and security breaches in the area.

According to "Sham Network," local sources from the town of Qarfa (Al-Ghazali's hometown) stated that the slain officer was considered the "right-hand man" of Brigadier Rustum Ghazali, one of the prominent leaders of the former regime's security apparatus, known for his involvement in suppressing protests during the Syrian revolution.

Sources confirmed that Khalid Al-Ghazali "committed serious violations against civilians, especially in Daraa," which witnessed the first protests against Assad's rule.

The sources mentioned that Al-Ghazali, who resided in Damascus, "disappeared from sight after the regime fell at the end of 2024," while it is worth noting that Rustum Ghazali _former head of the political security branch_ was killed in 2015 under mysterious circumstances following internal disputes, after accusations of "involvement in systematic torture and murder."

The incident comes amid escalating violence in southern Syria, where reports recorded the killing of 5 people and injuring 5 others last week due to armed clashes, stabbings, and war remnants explosions. The province also witnessed security campaigns resulting in the seizure of weapons, drugs, and confrontations with criminal networks.

Observers believe that the assassination of Al-Ghazali "is not only settling personal scores, but part of a deliberate targeting of symbols of the former regime," indicating the presence of "armed groups seeking revenge for the past repression, amidst government accountability absence."
