Pakistan authorities reported today, Tuesday, that more than 200 prisoners escaped from a prison in the southern city of Karachi late yesterday following a series of earthquakes that caused panic among the inmates. According to the Minister of Justice in Sindh province, Dhiya al-Hasan Langar, hundreds of prisoners were allowed to go to the prison yard due to the earthquakes, saying, "Panic spread here because of the earthquakes." The chaos in the prison seems to have overwhelmed the authorities, with a crowd of up to 1000 people. Langar mentioned that the prison break started before midnight yesterday and continued until the early hours of today. The prisoners seized weapons from the guards, leading to a gunfire exchange, then stormed the main gate. Langar stated that this incident is one of the largest prison breaks in Pakistan's history. The prison is located in a poor residential and industrial area in the Malir district of Karachi, Pakistan's largest city.
