The American health authorities have declared a state of alert in several states after discovering tomatoes contaminated with salmonella bacteria capable of causing serious illnesses and even death, leading to a wide recall of this product from the markets. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), tomatoes from "Williams Farms Riback" have been classified as "Class I recall," the highest level of severity recognized by the agency, only issued when there is a high likelihood that the product in circulation could lead to serious health problems or even death, a rare classification in the American market. Initial investigations date back to April 30, 2025, when the company voluntarily began recalling its tomatoes after signs of contamination appeared, before the FDA confirmed a month later that the product posed a real health threat requiring immediate warning and withdrawal. The contaminated shipment was sent to three U.S. states: Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and included 50 boxes with three packages each, 77 boxes weighing 10 pounds each, and 419 double boxes, each containing 60 tomatoes. These products were distributed under the labels of "Williams Farms" and "H&C Farms," all currently subject to recall. The producing company, based in South Carolina, stated that they have not received any reports of injuries so far, and the recall decision was voluntary as a precautionary measure in coordination with the authorities. Salmonella is a dangerous bacterium that causes severe intestinal infections that can develop into life-threatening health issues, especially in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of infection include diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, with complications potentially leading to blood infections, joint infections, or inflammation of the heart and arteries in extreme cases. This warning underscores the importance of food safety control, especially given the continuous increase in biological threats associated with food supply chains. Authorities in the affected states are expected to implement intensive regulatory measures on similar products in the near future.
