Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas announced today, Friday, that her country has decided to request consultations with NATO under Article 4 of the Alliance's treaty, following allegations of three Russian MiG-31 fighters violating Estonian airspace.
Kallas wrote on the social media platform X: "This morning, three Russian aircraft entered Estonian airspace. NATO fighters attempted to intercept them, forcing the Russian planes to retreat. This violation is unacceptable, and the government has decided to request consultations with NATO under Article 4."
Earlier, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that it summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires to deliver a note of protest regarding the alleged violation that occurred over the Gulf of Finland and lasted for 12 minutes.
So far, the Russian Ministry of Defense has not issued any official comment on these allegations, although it has previously confirmed that Russian aircraft adhere to international rules while flying over neutral waters and do not cross air routes or engage in dangerous confrontations with foreign aircraft.
