Drone Attack on American Facility in Baghdad Raises Tensions with Iran

The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, witnessed an unprecedented security incident after a drone targeted a key American diplomatic facility, believed to be a response from Iran-aligned armed groups to the American-Israeli war against Tehran.
The Washington Post reported, citing an unnamed security official and an internal alert issued by the U.S. State Department, that the attack targeted the U.S. diplomatic support center, an important logistics hub located near Baghdad Airport and Iraqi military bases.
The newspaper stated that the attack involved the launch of six drones towards the complex, five of which were intercepted by defenses, while one struck the American facility, prompting an internal alert for personnel to take cover after a guard tower was hit.
It is not yet known if there were any casualties.
The security official indicated that the attack was likely carried out by a group known as the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq," a coalition of Iran-backed armed factions.
This incident comes amid ongoing military escalation in the region, as the United States and Israel began attacks on Iran on February 28, and Iran responded with attacks on Israel and American bases in Gulf countries.
The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations stated that the American-Israeli attacks resulted in the deaths of over 1,300 civilians, while Israel reported 11 civilian deaths in its attacks, and the U.S. military confirmed the deaths of 7 of its soldiers and injuries to about 150 others according to Reuters reports.
For his part, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the strikes aim to eliminate what he described as "imminent threats" from Iran, referring to its nuclear programs, ballistic missiles, support for Hamas and Hezbollah, and activities that pose a threat.
Meanwhile, Iran denied any intention to possess nuclear weapons and described the attacks as a blatant violation of its sovereignty.
