Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi confirmed to his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday China's support for Iran in conducting nuclear talks with the United States, but opposed resorting to force and "unlawful" unilateral sanctions to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi assured the Iranian Foreign Minister during talks in the Chinese capital of Beijing of Beijing's readiness to enhance coordination and cooperation with Tehran on international and regional affairs.

Wang stated: "The Chinese side commends Iran's commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and respects its right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."

The Iranian Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday that Araghchi informed his Chinese counterpart of the latest developments in the "indirect talks between Iran and the United States," and thanked China for its constructive stance on the Iranian nuclear program and lifting sanctions.

The meeting took place ahead of new nuclear talks between the United States and Iran on Saturday, following Washington's imposition of sanctions on Chinese entities for purchasing Iranian oil in recent weeks.

President Donald Trump seeks to exert "maximum pressure" campaign on Tehran, including measures such as reducing Iranian oil exports to zero.
