At least 29 students were killed and more than 250 others were injured following an explosion followed by a stampede inside a high school in the capital Bangui in the Central African Republic, authorities announced today, Thursday.
The incident occurred yesterday inside the Barthélemy Boganda High School while more than 5300 students were taking the baccalaureate exams on its second day.
The Ministry of National Education stated that the explosion occurred during an attempt to restart a faulty electrical transformer on the school premises.
Official sources explained that the explosion caused panic among the students, leading to a collective stampede resulting in the majority of deaths and injuries.
Emergency teams responded quickly, with the injured being transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
