In the heart of the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, the famous Dam Square witnessed a horrific stabbing incident that left five people injured, including an elderly woman and a young girl, causing panic among passersby. Amid the chaos, a civilian young man bravely stood out, confronting the attacker and managing to restrain him until the police arrived and arrested him. The incident occurred after 3:30 pm local time on Sint Nicolaasstraat street near the square when a 34-year-old Ukrainian man from Odessa carried out the random attack. The motives behind the crime remain unclear as investigations are ongoing. The victims, of various nationalities, included a 67-year-old American woman, a 69-year-old American man, a 26-year-old Polish man, a 73-year-old Belgian woman, and a 19-year-old Dutch girl. Medical reports indicated that two of them are in critical condition. Security forces quickly deployed to the scene, with at least 14 police cars, a motorcycle officer, and an ambulance helicopter providing emergency medical support before leaving. The police closed off the surrounding area, temporarily halting tram services between Amsterdam Central Station and Dam Square, as well as disrupting the service on the New Zealand Forecourt line. As the media circulated details of the incident, a municipal council session in Amsterdam abruptly halted when Mayor Femke Halsema left the meeting due to the incident. After a short break, the session resumed without her presence. Eyewitnesses recounted moments of terror, with one mentioning seeing a girl being stabbed in the back before the attacker fled, while others confirmed that an elderly woman was also stabbed from behind in front of a fabric store at the corner of New Zealand Forecourt and Sint Nicolaasstraat streets. Despite Dam Square reopening later, questions still surround the motives behind this violent attack, awaiting revelations from the upcoming investigations.
