The Moroccan artist Bassma Boussel sparked a storm of controversy after appearing in a television interview where she revealed shocking details about her previous marriage to the Egyptian artist Tamer Hosny. Her fiery statements shed light on her psychological struggles after an early marriage that shattered her self-confidence, describing periods of hysterical crying and sedative use, evoking great sympathy from the audience while facing harsh criticism from others.
Bassma faced accusations of contradicting herself, especially after previously mentioning attempts at reconciliation with her ex-husband, only to affirm in the interview that she would never return to him.
In response to these criticisms;
Bassma took to defend herself on her Instagram account, posting powerful words in her illustrated stories, saying:
"It's strange how women are asked to stay silent so as not to tarnish a man's image, but men are not asked to behave decently to avoid breaking a woman's heart!"
Bassma, the mother of Tamer Hosny's three children, added:
"When a woman speaks after a long silence, they say why now?! And when she stays silent, they say why didn't she speak?! The problem is not in speaking or staying silent, but in some people's ability to hear the truth when it doesn't suit them."
She continued:
"Not every woman who speaks regrets it, and not every woman who stays silent is content... Sometimes the voice comes after patience is buried, and after the soul is freed from the shackles of fear or hesitation... When the truth becomes heavy on those accustomed to hearing only half of it."
These strong statements brought Bassma Boussel back into the spotlight, not just as an artist, but as a woman defying silence and shouting out a truth she lived, sparking a wide debate on women's rights and their ability to express their suffering without fear of criticism.
