A Sudanese military leader stated in remarks to Al Jazeera today, Friday, that a force allied with the Sudanese army was able to regain control of the town of Abu Qumra in North Darfur after fierce battles with the Rapid Support Forces.
This town is considered a strategic location in the region, which has been witnessing escalating confrontations between the two sides for months.
According to field reports, the recovery of Abu Qumra came after a local armed force joined the ranks of the army, which enhanced its ability to launch a counterattack against the positions of the Rapid Support Forces in the area.
The Rapid Support Forces had previously taken control of the town and committed violations that forced hundreds of civilians to flee towards the border with Chad.
Local sources indicated that the recent battles saw the use of heavy weapons, and the army is striving to secure the town and its surroundings to prevent any counterattack.
It was also noted that the recovery of Abu Qumra represents an important shift in the balance of power in North Darfur, especially after a series of attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces in the region over the past months.
