A 5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Eastern Algeria Reaching the Tunisian Border

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Tebessa region in eastern Algeria on the evening of Sunday, August 17, with its effects extending to the border areas with Tunisia.
According to the Algerian Center for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Geophysics, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 kilometers southeast of the town of Négrin, with its aftershocks reaching the western border of Tunisia. The center also recorded an aftershock of 4.7 magnitude minutes after the main quake.
For its part, the Civil Defense Agency reported no human or material losses during the initial assessment of the affected area.
This earthquake comes a day after a 3.2 magnitude tremor struck the Laghouat province in southern Algeria on Saturday, according to official data.
