An expanded meeting began in the capital Damascus today, Wednesday, bringing together Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shar'a with the leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Muzlum Abdi, in the presence of Washington's special envoy to Syria, Tom Barak, and a representative of the US State Department in the Euphrates region.
The meeting is being held at the People's Palace in Damascus, accompanied by another meeting between a delegation from the Self-Administration and officials in the Syrian government inside Tishreen Palace, as part of discussions on implementing the March agreement signed between the two parties four months ago.
The official Syrian news channel, "Al-Ikhbariya", reported that President Al-Shar'a received the American envoy and his accompanying delegation at the People's Palace, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Al-Shibani, as part of an official visit aimed at discussing prospects for mutual cooperation and enhancing political dialogue between the two countries, without mentioning the participation of the SDF leader in the meeting.
In a related context, Kurdish media reported the arrival of a Turkish delegation in the capital Damascus today, coinciding with a surprise appearance of the leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party - PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, in a recorded speech, his first in 26 years, in which he announced the end of "armed struggle" against the Turkish state, calling on his supporters and all Kurdish forces to adopt "democratic politics" as an alternative strategic choice.
These meetings are part of diplomatic efforts led by Washington and European countries to remove obstacles to the implementation of the March agreement, amidst ongoing differences between the two sides regarding the implementation mechanism and timing.
A Kurdish source familiar with the meeting agenda, told the "Agence France-Presse" agency that the discussions include "four main files, the first being the form of the Syrian state and the nature of the relationship between the Self-Administration and the government in Damascus, in addition to the economic and military power files".
