In a step that sparked wide controversy on social media platforms, Syrian star Samer Al-Masri strongly criticized the use of insults and offensive words in the dialogues included in some Syrian series currently, warning against excessive pursuit of "trending" at the expense of the quality of drama.
In a provocative post on his official Instagram account, Al-Masri addressed his message to his fellow artists, producers, and writers, saying:
"When there is a dramatic justification for any scene no matter how daring it is, we certainly enjoy it, but when insults and vulgar dialogues become part of the scene only for the sake of provocation or attracting trends, this tarnishes the reputation of Syrian drama, which has been known over the years for respecting the intellect and taste of the Arab viewers."
Although Al-Masri did not mention any specific series in his speech, the hints he provided made the audience speculate that his speech might be directed towards the series "Under the Seventh Sky," in which his compatriot Taim Hassan stars.
This series has sparked a lot of controversy recently, especially due to some bold and personal dialogues delivered by Hassan in the role of "Major Musa," which included some sharp phrases and scenes carrying political and social references that may have raised questions among viewers.
Despite the various speculations, Al-Masri remains firm in emphasizing the necessity for Syrian drama to be more careful in presenting content that respects the viewers' mentality and preserves its artistic distinction away from attempts to ride the "trend" at any cost.
