The General Security Administration in Deir ez-Zor province, in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Defense, announced today, Tuesday, May 20, the start of a security operation targeting drug and arms traffickers' dens on the Syrian-Iraqi border, especially in the Bukamal area in eastern Deir ez-Zor countryside.

The director of security in the Bukamal area, Mustafa Al-Ali, stated that "the General Security forces are carrying out a raid on a group of major drug and arms traffickers in the border area of Bukamal," noting that this step is part of "efforts to control security and borders."

Al-Ali added that the wanted individuals in this operation are "criminals involved in smuggling drugs and arms between Syrian and Iraqi territories in coordination with lawless militias," emphasizing that the campaign aims to enhance control over border areas and prevent the smuggling of illicit materials.

He also pointed out that "the General Security forces are working in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Defense to control the Syrian-Iraqi borders and prevent the entry of drugs and arms through those crossings supervised by militias that do not abide by the law."

He concluded his statement by emphasizing "continuing to search for tunnels used for drug trafficking between Syrian and Iraqi territories along the border in the Bukamal area," confirming that "this campaign will continue until achieving security and stability in the eastern Deir ez-Zor border region."
