Six sources from Reuters revealed that the United States is seeking to ensure that no foreign individuals hold leadership positions in the Syrian government, a move that reflects Washington's tightening stance towards Damascus and its attempts to impose new conditions on the country's governance structure amid increasing political pressure.
According to the sources, Natasha Franceschi, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and Syria, delivered a list of U.S. demands to Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shabani during a private meeting held on the sidelines of the Brussels conference, where both parties discussed political developments and Washington's conditions for the future governance of Syria.
This move comes amid rising U.S. and international pressure on the new Syrian government, alongside attempts to rearrange the political landscape according to an American vision that seeks to bring about fundamental changes in the power structure, which could open the door to new tensions in relations between the two sides.
